I think that Hugh was on the right track as far as checking with your unenployment office for hired help. I am in the process of expanding my buisness. I have to quadrouple(sp) the size of my buisness in the next 90-120 days to fulfill a new contract. I will end up going thru at least 40 - 50 people before I find the 12 or so I will need. Most of them won't make it thru the first week. Keep up hope and always go with your first basic gut instinct. Even if they have no experiance go with your gut. Matt

Matt, I think that sounds like good advice. I just hope I don't go broke in the process. I'm small enough that the wrong person could probably run the business under.
Have you noticed that employees now tend to TELL you when they are taking a day off or coming in late or leaving early? Geez, back in the day, I remember having to ask about such things.

Paul,

I hire a crew every summer. Lots of times, they find me, so I try to discourage them from working here. Organic farming does not look so glamorous from the back side of a hoe when it is 90 degrees and there are lots of mosquitos.

If they are still interested, they have to come out and work with me for a day. It is easy to spot someone who is a good worker vs. someone with romantic notions about farming. If they still don't work out, I talk to them one week and generally fire them the next.

If you have an Ag school near you or if your department of Ag has a beginning farmer program, they might also be places to look for workers. Students turn into pumpkins on the first of September. In either case, you would probably have to find someone new every year.

Hope you find somebody good.

Greg
