Service Manual made it sound simple...

The growling noise coming from the transmission in my H got loud enough that I couldn't pretend to ignore it anymore.

The manual says something like "Pull the clutch shaft by removing six bolts, then remove the transmission cover plate and unbolt the bearing cases. Transmission my now be lifted out."

The guy who wrote that must still get a chuckle out of it. Somehow he forgot to mention that by the time I remove the clutch shaft and transmission, the floor of the shed would be covered with enough iron to start a junkyard.

The little roller bearing up front fell out in pieces when the trans was removed, but there doesn't appear to be any other problems. It looks like the worse part of the whole job will be getting the liftall back in place. And I did discover that the throwout bearing has a grease fitting (hiding behind a bent up cover plate).
