I have a 1946 Farmall H that starts easy when cold and runs great once its started. The problem is that if I run it for 20 or more minutes and then shut it down, it won't start again until it is completely cooled back down. (Usually a few hours.)What causes this and can I remedy it? Thanks!

Had a similar problem a couple of years ago with my '47 H. Mine would die after about ten or twenty minutes of running. Replaced the coil. Hasn't happened again. Do the coil check (after it gets to where it won't start) where you hold the distributor end of the center wire about 1/8" away from a good ground, turn the engine over - if the coil spark is yellow or orange instead of the usual white/blue, try a new coil.

Forgot to note, hold that wire with some well-insulated pliers and maybe even some rubber gloves so you don't get bitten.

Check to see if you have fire at your plugs when it quits running. If no fire I would first replace the condenser and see if it keeps running.
Then if it quits, I would replace the coil. Hal

Something a lot of people don't check. If you have low compression combined with thin oil. This will cause the pistons not to seal properly and the cylinders won't develop enough pressure to fire. The way to check this is to pull the plugs and squirt some oil into the cylinders and see if it fires up.

Mark:
I"d replace the coil. I"d wager that"s your problem.

As Jeff said coil, aslo maybe condenser. Good idea to check for air leaks at carb to maifold and manifold to block.
