Today I was able to get down to my dad's to replace the battery, battery cables w/ 2/0 gauge, spark plugs, plug wires. It sure makes a differnace. I noticed the ampmeter still isn't moving, could it be a bad gauge? Haven't messed with the gen. yet, will see if the battery gets drained first I guess. Thanks agian for all the help earlier.

A week spot to look at.... The whole charging system of an H depends on the contact the front of the switch box makes with the back of the switch box (the unit that contains the rotary switch and the ammeter). If the two halfs are rusty and not making good contact it may not charge. Try taking it apart and cleaning the rim where they slide together. Your valves can easily be adjusted once the valve cover is removed. An IT manual is a great investment.

Also, it sounds like the valves are "ticking", what might that be? Am I able to adjust the valves?

About seven posts down there are instructions on how to adjust the valve lash.
