It was optional.
Its a gear reduction unit.(Planetary like an automatic transmission has). Its trouble if its abused and/or old.
Basically it changes the gear ratios in each gear.(sorta like having a .5,1.5,2.5,3.5,4.5 and .5R gear as well as 1,2,3,4,5/R).

What kind of trouble can it be. I think that the one i am looking at has this. There is a tall lever with a grab handle at the top on the left side on the battery.

When they go bad, they slip and the tractor wont move at all with TA engaged. This is a slipping sprag mechanism. With any luck if it slips in TA,it wont in regular mode and you can leave it in that direction (forward lever).TAs are expensive units to buy rebuilt and they utilize a 2nd clutch assembly thats smaller yet more expensive than the engine clutch. For my money I would wish for a Ute without TA,but if only they came with a "Granny Low" 1st gear.
My 300 has TA and thankfully it now works seeing as how its not freezy winter anymore, and I guess the tranny lube got all frozen/gooey with those sub 32 degree temps.

And the wrestling upstart league NWA/TNA.

And the Pontiac Firebird T/A.

And the police call a traffic accident a "TA".

But IH called "Torque Amplifier" the TA before anybody else used it.
