About 4 years ago, I switched from non-detergent 30 weight oil to 10w-30 in my '47 M. It has been working pretty well so far and definitely makes a difference in the winter. Today, I bought non-detergent 30 weight oil and am going change the oil and run it this summer. I am just checking to see if there is any problem with doing this and just would like a general opinion of detergent vs. non-detergent..... Thanks

WHY would you buy non-detergent oil, especially after you've been using detergent oil???

Ok, ok, I won't put non detergent oil in. hehehehehe I went and bought detergent sae 30 today and put it in. I already had some non detergent and didn't think it would hurt to put it in. But, judging from the response I got, I decided to buy detergent..... .Thanks for your response and questioning my insanity.....hehehehehe

Check that..... Actually, I already had a gallon of the non detergent and wanted to use it. So, I bought another gallon yesterday and was going run it this way this summer. But, I thought the better of it..... Again, thanks for your response.....

If your want to know the difference in Detergent Oil and Non-Detergent Oil, all you have to do is take a bath or shower with NO SOAP --- which will give you what an engine will feel like with Non-Detergent Oil, and with SOAP is like Detergent Oil, Now you got It ????? ??

Detergent GOOD....Non-Detergent BAD in reply to Orion, 04-15-2005 23:53:50
Just as the others stated, non-detergent oils went out of use with vacuum tube black & white TV sets. Get in the 21st century and use a detergent oil.

The reason non detergent type oils were used in these old engines is that detergent oil was not available until about the early fiftys. Everyone I knew that farmed full time was using detergent oil by 1960.

If an engine has an oil filter then you want to run detergent because as RAW said the detergent keeps the dirt suspended until it can get trapped by the filter. If an engine does not have a filter then you want a non-detergent oil so that the dirt will fall out of the oil rather than getting carried around thru the engine.

I agree with RAW on sticking with the detergent
oil. I would switch to 30wt detergent oil if you're using that tractor as a working tractor.
A retired IH mechanic lives not far from me and he once said if you travel the Interstates with
your car or truck a lot, he would recommend using
30wt oil. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this subject. Hal

There won't bea problem going to non-detergent oil. If you haven,t had any problems with the multiweight, I would at least stay with detergent 30 wt. . The non-detergent letsthe sludge, carbon, etc that an engine produces stick to the block, head, etc inside the engine. The detergent keeps these particles in suspension and keeps the enngine cleaner inside. Going from non det. to det oil in old engines is sometimes bad becuase of these deposits and the detergent cleans them up and can plug up oil passages, etc. I have been running Havoline Syntec Blend in my Cub, mainly to help it start in the winter. Have not had a problem, as the previous owner used it enough to keepit from sludging up.
