Can you tell what year a 460 diesel tractor was made, by the block serial # ?My # is 278262 R1... R1 is also on trans housing and other stuff?I know I can find out by talking to local tractor place ,but , I just had block welded and I am trying to use an exsisting head gasket to check for leaks in sys.I am sorry if I am kinda loopy ,but ,tractor was given to me ,and I am just trying to see if it is worth fixing for the minamal amount of money.Everything else looks good.

CNKS is right, what you have is a part number. His later advice is right also.

That is a part number, the serial is on a plate on the right side of the clutch housing. If it is missing there are casting dates on all the large cast parts, these tell the date the part was cast, they will all be different, but you should be able to tell the year. They are in the form of 11*8*D. D is 1958, The 460 was made from 1958-1963, so E is 1959, I is 1963, etc. The * resembles a screw head.
