This is a frined of mine that has 154 lowboy and he is having trouble keeping it running or run period. Since it started on starter fluid, ran and then died, I believe this means that he has a fuel/air mixture problem in his carb. What do you guys think? I have attached his last email to me below.

Tanner Went home today and figured I might as well try to start that piece of stuff one more time, so I did I just put some starter fluid in it and it started right up! So I mowed the yard for about 15minutes and went to gas it up so I shut it off and now the COC?$; thing won't start again! It was acting like it wanted to it was almost started chuging and everthing and then it won't even act like it wants to start anymore. The spark isn't all that strong either. Do you think that I should go head and buy a 12 volt ignition coil? Is it bad for it if you put a 12 in and it calls for a 6volt. I don't know what it calls for or know what is in it now. But I know that it gets really hot! Just wanted to let you know. I am almost ready to put a rag in it and let er go!!

Tune up: plugs, points, condensor, time the engine. Check and clean the fuel system. Check and clean the air cleaner.

Replace the coil - 6 volt if not to expensive. 12 volt coil you need use a ballist resistor (voltage drop).

Lub job and fluid change probably wouldn't hurt.

Well his 154 lowboy should be a 12volt system, so it should have a 12 volt coil, however his setup has a stepdown resistor between the coil and the ignition, so that tells me it must be a 6 volt coil, or somebody felt it was neccessary to add in an extra part to the electrical system with the extra resistor.

Install a new condenser with the points too. Hal

Sounds like weak ignition problem to me. The coil "gets really hot" is the key - it should become only slightly warm after extended operation. An overheated coil may still throw a weak spark - enough spark to ignite ether but insufficient to fire gasoline.

I'll bet the 154 is 12 volt, has a 6 volt coil installed and has no ignition ballast resistor. This will cause the coil to overheat, and overheating reduces output voltage and will ultimately destroy the coil.

If this is the case I would replace the coil with a "12 volt" coil. And while at it install a fresh set of points (likely the existing points are burned).

Hope this helps!
