When I got my SMTA with bad TA had similar experience. The stuff that came out of tranny was real bad but then it was probably changed, or installed anyway, somewhere areound 1954. Anyway some of the wise souls here advised using Hy tran in everything on the tractor except the engine. (and steering box). Has worked for me after ouverhauling TA.

you had better use HY TRAN..these old things are a magnet to moisture and HY TRAN will absorbe the water instead of seperating it like regular gear oil...as long as it says HY TRAN ,the plus or regular doesnt matter..

I have both a 400 and a SMTA and I use HyTrans in both. I split the 400 and put a rebuilt TA in and it was recomended then to run HyTrans in it. When I split my SMTA of course what I drained out was thick calf poop. When I got into the TA and all tore down all the springs and pins were gummed up with sticky old gear lube. I was able to clean it up and reassemble with parts from two TA's. This is the reason that I was informed it's best to use the HyTrans, that it is thiner and gives better lubrication with out as much gumming. I have had to replace two axle seals but that was not to much trouble. The 400 TA has been going strong for 12 years and my SMTA for 3 years now.

Good Luck!

David, on the Farmalls from the 450 series on down I have the best luck using 80-90 wt gear lube as it does not leak through every gasket and seal that has not been replaced. I tried using Hy-tran on my M Diesel when I reworked it and had drips everywhere.I drained it and put heavy gear lube back in and hardly a trace. Usually shows up at the outer axle seals and pto seals first. Hope this helps. Migraine

Dave,

I haven't been around a 400 since the 50s. I think you probably can, but I'd rather one of these other guys who are more knowledgeable on the old rascals answer you.

Maybe someone will jump in here.

Allan
