I helped my dad do a valve job on his H 7 or 8 years ago. He told me that he recently blew the head gasket and was blowing anti-freeze out of the exhaust and when he drained the oil there was anti-freeze that came out first. He had a machine shop check over the head and they said there wasn"t anything wrong with it. I am pretty sure that the head was not re-torqued after it was put on. Neither of us knew it should be done. How should he work it and how long before re-torquing?

Usally you retorque after you get it good and hot then the gasket will settle in and you retorque it. I say after its cold but some here say retorque when its still warm. OK Now what about our vehicles do we buy them and take them in for retorque NO I dont think so Steel on steel or aluminnum is suposed to be no retorque but the ones that are cardboard on one side you do. If your Dads H went that long I would not worry I usally Change them alot more often than that. Hope this helps
