As I am still looking for a good service manual so in the meantime maybe you guys can help me out. I have a `49 Kerosene W6 and I need to know which carb adjusting screw (3 of them) does what and what there initial setting should be.

Hey tractor guy!-backwards
My I&T manual is a little sparse on the details, so I'll do the best I can. The screw near the bottom of the bowl is the main jet fuel screw. Turning it CW makes the mixture leaner.
The screw on the upper part of the carb, but below the throttle plate area is the idle adjusting air screw. Turning it CW makes the mixture richer.
The screw on the carb end of the shaft (tube) coming from the governor is the idle speed screw.
As far as initial settings, it sticks in my mind that 1 to 1and a half turns out on the screws should get it to run, and then tweak it from there. Maybe someone else knows better. The idle screw can be left alone until it all is running good, then just adjust it until you get a nice idle speed.
Paul
