I got a friend who has a D358 with bottom end problems, probably not worth overhauling, can he repower with a combine engine like a 815 or 915 engine, or does anyone know where there is a good D358 German diesel?

If the block isn't junk, it's worth buying a crankshaft. You'll need to do some major work to get a 300 or 400 series engine to fit like "Repower" said below. You'd have to go to 66 series frame rails, meaning that you would need to make adapter plates to make your front bolster fit. Then there's a million other small things to change. The 715 combine's 310 basically will not work without spending big money to get the tractor flywheel onto the crankshaft. A 361 or 407 out of a tractor would be about the easiest non-German replacement, but there again, $$$$.

Todd08. How bad is the bottom should be able to grind the crank shaft. You will need to put in new valves seats and valves mkae sure the valves are where they belong not to deep not out to far.
I understand the new pistons give better compresson.

I believe the 815 and 915 combines used the D414/436/466 series engines. They're too long to fit in between the bell housing and radiator. You'd need the entire front end off a '66 series tractor.

The IH 715 combine used the German diesel, a D358.

You could also use the smaller D312/360 engines, but you still need EVERYTHING that bolts on to the engine to make it work. If you pay a fair price for the engine and all the associated parts, you'll have more into the project than you would if you went out and bought a '66 series in decent condition.

The 715 combine used the german 310 diesel. I would rebuild the 358. In the end it would the cheapest option and once rebuilt it would run for thousands more hours. If you buy another engine you might end up rebulding that one to in the near future to.
