I'm looking for a 2 disc turning plow for my Super A. A fellow has one for sale, says it's VERY heavy, that it's belly mounted, and that there's a wheel on the back. Does this sound like the Farmall 2-disc plow made for the SA? Has anyone had experience with this set-up, and would you recommend it for plowing pasture with pretty heavy sod cover? We only have about an acre to plow.
Thanks for your consideration.
Regards,
Bill in west Alabama

I grew up on a SA and a 140; both having a 2 disk plow. yes, it takes a little time to hook them up but they do a good job. i have pulled them thru sand, loam, to clay. Ive even pulled a 3 disk plow with an H i had.

IN contrast to what others said, I think the disk plow would turn sod just fine. However, I would not recommend you get it. The reason is that the plow is very heavy, and the set up and attachment is by no means simple. You would need a manual to make sure you had everything mounted correctly. The plow mounts to the final drives (not the belly) and has an arm that attaches to the tractor steering mechanism to steer the back wheel. The plow lifts by a rod attached to hydraulic Rockshaft on left side of tractor. Much easier to just locate a mounted mold board plow for your Super A. Attachment and set up for that is pretty straight forward and there are many of these laying around not used.

Your best plow for the grass you describe would be a moldboard plow and you mite want to spray it down with round-up to kill everything so after you get it plowed it wont try and grow.

Question about Round-Up, I too turned over "sod" this year and was wondering about the stuff growing back. If I put Round up down, will that mean everything dies including what i want to grow this year ? birds? squirrels etc ? Also, is this stuff very toxic ? I had planned on growing Pumpkins for Jack o laterns, not consumption.

Thanks,
Brian

ROUND-UP is a contac killer spray before plowing and there is no caryover. Will not hurt anything that you plant. You need to kill the grass on top as it will still grow after plowing to a certain extent. The sooner you spray the better as you want everything to grow first. Best time would be in the fall but you can do it in the spring.

Spraying Roundup after plowing the sod is a waste of time and money. The grass blades are mostly buried and the spray will never get to them. Roundup works on the blades, not the roots.

True enough; I'd thought he was spraying before turning.

Brian,
Roundup will kill whatever plant it touches in about 2 weeks. So be very careful where you spray. It does a thorough job if you follow directions to the letter. It travels down into the roots to kill the plant. Once it has entered the roots, it is no longer viable, so it won't kill anything else after that (though some studies claim residual effects - which are not a problem IMHO if you don't overuse it.) It doesn't affect other life forms, if you believe their literature, and I do. I wouldn't want to use it much, and we're not going to use it again, I hope, but as a one-time application, I'd do it.

My question: how did you plow the sod? What implement(s)?
Thanks,
Bill in west Alabama
