difference between relay and regulator

I am restoring a Farmall MD. It has what appears to be a relay mounted near the radiator. I have to buy a new wiring harness for it. I can only find harnesses for tractors that have regulators mounted under the gas tank. I was wondering if I could change this tractor to have a regulator instead of a relay? Thanks for the help.

Adam - How many positions does the light switch have?

If it's got 4 positions the tractor was originally equipped with a cutout relay. But if there's only only 3 positions then it had voltage regulator - that relay by the radiator had to have been added for some other purpose.

Note also that cutout relays are almost always mounted directly on the generator.

Bob,
I would have to look at the light switch. I can't remember what it is for sure. The parts book shows a harness for a relay mounted near the radiator. I also have another MD with the relay mounted in the same place. Both of them look like they have factory harnesses.

Thats probably a cut out relay. It opens the circuit when the keyswitch is turned off.

Did an MD have a keyswitch? I didn't know that! Jon
