Anyone got any ideas as to what may be causing my 1948 Cub to overheat?
Radiators new last season, belts good, fans turning right, radiators clear of dirt and grass build up,and caps good, and yes its got coolant in it!
Thanks Bob

If that tractor has a thermostat, it not be opening fully. I wouldn't think the radiator would have any blockage being only one year old.
I would pull the thermstat and run the tractor
and see if it still overheats without the thermostat. Hal

I don't know for sure but I don't think Thermosyphon systems have thermostats.
Don't have a lot of knowledge of how these systems work so If someone out there knows could you explain it?
Thanks

Robert, one thing that no one has mentioned is that these old cubs tend to choose their own coolant level. If you are filling the radiator to the top and it is spitting coolant out, it may just be too full. The typical cub will maintain a radiator level about 1 1/2 to 2 inches below the fill neck. You might try running yours for a while and seeing if it does not do the same thing. As long as the water level is above the top of the core tubes it will cool fine. If you continue to lose level after dropping below that level, you have a problem.

Thanks BigDog
It dose do that when you fill it all the way up!
It really only overheats when you work it hard, Like in tall and heavy grass, the rest of the time it seems to be ok.
My biggest comcern is I'm buying a plow and disc for it and I'm concerned about it overheating then. Thanks Bob

Do you lose water level below the fins? If not, it isn't really overheating, it's just blowing out excess liquid.

Hi George the fan shroud is in place, thanks for the responce
Chadd - It is a thermosyphon, I'd never heard of having to mix the coolant before adding to the radiator, I'll have to remember that one. Thanks
Old - I kind of thought that it may be getting restrickted by junk in the cooling passages, I have never heard of using vinager to clean one out!Dose this really work? And will it damage the the new radiator in anyway? also would I need to fill it up with vinager or only half or three quarters full ? Thanks

Check your timing. It can cause it to run hot.

Many Cubs have the fan shroud missing because they are a pain to change belts around and people don't know how to do it. Is yours missing?

check for scale buildup in the water passages. If it uses the thermosyphon cooling system (no water pump), make sure that the coolant is premixed before dumping it into the radiator. If it isn't, it won't circulate because the principles thermosyphon is based on aren't met.

Probably has junk in the water ways of the engine. I'd drain it fill it with vinegar run it till hot let it cool and flush with clean water for an hour of so
