Recently purchased a 63 460 to do some work around the yard. I"m a little new to this stuff so I"m looking for some help with the brakes. Tried to adjust them but still not working. Bought a manual, but still not sure exactly how they work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help!! Although its not as easy as some think. There are two obstacles to tackle. First, there"s some kinf of support bar that crosses right through the middle of the drum about 6 inches away...will have to be removed. Secondly, there"s a piece of the rear-end in the way of on of the bolts that holds the cover on. May have to use the torch to trim it back a bit. Is this the norm for these tractors?

Like Aces said, when you step on the brake pedal, the two actuator disks rotate in different directions. Inside there is a tapered groove that the balls set in. As the actuators rotate, the two disks of the actuator cam out pushing the brake disks against the brake housing giving you the friction that stops the tractor. If the brake disks are too worn, you will not be able to adjust them enough to make good contact. They aren't that expensive to replace. Sometimes the balls get rusty or pitted and don't want to roll or the groove gets a pit worn in it. If that's the case, the pedal won't move much. I smoothed the balls and groove on my 460 with sme emery paper and now they work well.

Dang it! I went thru the brakes on our 460 last summer, and I can't remember the disc thickness. I do know that a seemingly minor difference in thickness between old and new mean a big difference in performance!

The disc brakes on these IH girls are a cinch to work on. There's no excuse for having stinky brakes--these parts are reasonable and are easy to service.

Tom they are a disk brake with the actuater in between the 2 disk. The 2 disks could be warn bad, could just need cleaning. Take the adjusting nuts off then take the 5 I think cap screws out of the drum and you can pull the drum off. you should get the drum the outside disk and the actuator, the inside disk should stay on the brake shaft. You will need to remove the 2 springs that hold the actuator together then glean the balls good and the hole they set in. I don't know how thick the disk should be, so you might have to ask a dealer.
