I found a new pulley and gear box still in the shipping crate at a dealer. Only the metal parts were painted. The tin on the outside had been painted before it was nailed on. Can't remember if the nails were painted or bare galvanized.

I think the only paint that would be on the inside would be what just happened to find it's way in there. I have several belt pulleys, some of them show no paint at all inside, others show slight traces of paint.

I have my dad's pulley from our 300 we had on the farm. It's now on my H but when I got it from home, it had the original paint on it because dad took the pulley off the 300 when they got rid of the old belt driven stationary hammer mill and got a pto driven hammer mill in about 1965. The pulley sat in the attack of the pump house for many years. (The M was used on the hammer mill most of the time any way.) The pulley was painted all red except for the outside paper that the belt run on. It has some tar or belt dressing on it but mostley brown in color.
