My '68 IH 656D has a TA that isn't functioning correctly. I thought the planetary gears were stuck because the tractor would freewheel in low (TA engaged) and would not in direct. Yesterday, I drove around some steep hills on my place and I would say the tractor does freewheel in low and freewheels in direct as well, but much less so.

I know I don't want to put the TA through much more freewheeling here, so experience much appreciated.

My conclusion is that the TA clutch is slipping. I adjusted it per service manual. Thoughts beside mechanic error (which I am going to recheck this morning)? Can I adjust the clutch fingers without splitting the tractor from the top cover? I see reference in the service manual to another publication which covers TA clutch adjustment.....anyone have this information?

Regards, Tip

Hi Tip,

Sounds like you are doing what I do. Looking for trouble where there really is none. :>)

Sounds to me like your tractor is operating just fine. Betcha it isn't freewheeling on the high side; your mind is taking ya there. :>)

Now, about this smoke on my old 686..... .....

Allan

Thanks Allan and Hugh, and I think I really do have an issue.

Today, after running the tractor a bit more, I had milky hydraulic fluid dripping out of a hole more or less under the TA. I obviously need to change the hydraulic fluid, but I must have a seal out in the tranny. Since there is no speed difference direct/
TA, my guess is that this oil is causing the TA clutch to slip.

So, looks like I am going to split the tractor this week and fix it.

Regards, Tip

Tip: I am not going to get into adjustment, stick right to your manuals with this. Just too much room for error without the diagram and measurments.

Your 656 should never free wheel in high on TA, it will always free wheel on the low side. Do not allow the tractor to free wheel at anytime. That can damage the TA.
