I have a 1941 farmall M and some times when I depress the clutch it will not disengage and some times it will not engage. Yet, at other times it works just fine. The tension on the clutch peddle seems normal.Infact, when it engages properly, it acts very normal. There is no slipage in the clutch and there is no unusual noise when operating it except that the gears grinde when it does not ingage. I just wonder if anyone can give me an idea what could be wrong befor I take it apart. I have never taken apart a clutch. This is my first time.

Dont drop the pump just yet.Run the clutch rod out some and try it again. You may be able to just take loose the shaft and slide it back enough to put some lude on it without having to completely pull the clutch out.

Aces, Thanks for the information on my M clutch problems. Will I have to drop the clutch to oil the splines?

Gerard I would think the drive member is hanging up on the splines. I would drop the pump and try ti get some oil on the splines. You can drop the clutch out the pump hole.
