Farmall H problem

I bought a 1945 Farmall H and it ran ok but needed a carb so I bought a new one and put it on.Now when I start it ,it tries to run but it wont get above a rough idle then it shoots fire out the stack backfires and goes dead.What have I done wrong???

Hey thanks guys .I screwed the adjusting screw out on the bottom of the carb 1 turn and she started right up ,but still ran rough and was shooting fire out the stack but I let her run and pretty soon she was purring like a kitten .Thanks again.

Sounds like a lean fuel condition. Try opening (turn left) the main mixture screw on the bottom of the carb 1/2 or 1 turn.

Are you sure you got the gov rod set right on the carb, they can be tricky at times. You may also have to set the carb to the govanor as per the book
