we just had this problem on dads H after forty some yrs the gears had the meshing surface corners chipped off changed those gears and most of the bearings do to age and convienence as open. If you do take apart DO NOT getthe reverse idler gear down in the bottom end for end as this will cause this howl and will not go into 2nd gear. The idler gear will look identical on both ends and same # of teeth.

My H does the same thing, in every gear but fifth. That, and where it sounds to me that the noise is originating makes me think that my culprit is the constant mesh gear.
IH's "Blue Ribbon Service Training Course Serviceman's Guide" warns of gear whine if the backlash and tooth contacts are not set perfectly when the gears are new. It has instructions for setting them, using red lead mixed with a little oil and applied with a stencil brush to the teeth to check the contact. I'll quote,"This is so important because gears will not wear in, nor will they improve with use. Rough spots, of course, will wear down and teeth will become smooth; but, if they are noisy and are operated continuously that way, there is little possibility of their ever operating quietly even after an attempt is made to reset them. The responsibility is with the serviceman to do a perfect job every time. Use only matched sets of gears for replacement purposes, take the time to set them properly and the life and efficiency of the parts will be materially increased." A long quote I know, but just reading the quality of the writing in these old manuals makes me feel better. I can't imagine in this day a service instructor's knowing to use the possessive with a nominative gerund.
Anyway, it leads me to believe that, in my case at least, there's nothing to be done at this point and it likely won't get worse in my lifetime.
That said, maybe you should check your gear oil for metal flakes and chunks next time you change it. Good luck, Wm

Thanks for the information! I have been fighting that same transmission noise for a long time. I tore the tranny apart twice and have replaced all the bearings and some of the gears and still have the noise. Your post explains why. I feel better now!
