Guys,

I have had this slow leak in an SM gas tank. Does any one have a good way to fix this problem??
It's difficult for me to run anything on $2.50 gas, but I can no longer watch it leak out. The leak is more than just wetness on the tank but not quite drip forming. I'm taking it of today to start on it!! Folks are starting to turn soil here in east central WI. Love this time of the year!!!

Butch

The best product for this is called Seal-All it used to be sold at Harley dealers but since they yuppified they dont have it.It also was sold in hardware stores.Im not sure any more because I had tubes of it and have not tried to buy lately. Its clear and goes right over paint.I love J-b weld for many things but Seal-All is made for this type of gas leak.

Depending on the condition, if you have one pin hole, you are liable to get a few more, my suggestion is to take it to a radiator shop, have it cleaned, if it will not ruin it, and then have them seal the inside of the tank. worked good for me on a couple of old tanks.

these guys have given great ideas and i'll throw one more in to mix. i restore three wheelers also and good tanks are hard to come by. anything with a pin hole gets cleaned up real good and then some JB weld is used. i can smooth and blend it in good and paint over it. good luck.

If it is where you can get at it handy just smear a little gasket cement on a sheet metal screw and plug it.

Butch, the two part stuff that old is talking about works like a champ. I have both tanks on my GMC truck patched with it, some patches are 10 years old and non have ever leaked.

I have solder them with a large soldering iron.
I just drained all the gas from the tank and sanded the area where the leak is until the metal is nice and shiny. I applied flux and then heated
the spot with the soldering iron and let the solder flow out over the hole.

Do not use an open flame or any smoking while doing this.

We have a local radiator shop that will repair
gas tanks and they do not steam clean them. They blow air through the tank and then use a torch.
I left before they started on mine. The place has been in business over 60 years. I have seen postings on here on relining these old gas tanks, not sure where it's available. Hal

For a bandaid, smear bar soap on the hole. That'll stop it until you have time to remove the tank and do it right.
