Just got a 1947 H. Can turn engine by hand from the fan but can"t make engine spin with starter. Have good battery and have used two different starters including the new one off my restored H. Acts like engine is trying to spin but can"t quite. Can anyone help?

Grampian, I agree with "Old", rermove the spark plugs, lube cylinders with tranny fluid or oil and leave the plugs out, spin the motor over, via the starter or jack it up and rock a rear wheel. When you have good "spin", replace the plugs and work on fuel/spark for the actual start.....good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

The teeth are gone from the ring gear on the flywheel, nothing for the starter to engage with.

I'd start by putting some tranny fluid in each cylinder, that loosens things up and stop dry start problem. You may have a rust ring that is stopping it from turning over. And as the other guy said go right to the starter with your power to start with, that way you get max volts/amps just to get it to spin the first time

Make sure all those battery connections at the battery, starter and ground are nice and shiny.
Need to use #0 or#00 cables. Hal

Are the battery cables and connections in good shape? Try puting power to the starter direct with a pair of jumper cables. If 6 volt you will need #1 or larger cables. I can barely crank my W6 by hand, lots of compression, with new 1/0 cables my 6 v system turns her over no problem.

Very likely a bad cable. Had the same problem with my Cub Cadet last year. The engine would barley turn over. Bought a new battery and still the same so I took a heavy junber cable (I made from old welder cables) and jumped around each cable until I found the bad cable. Use a good HEAVY DUTY jumper cable and see if this works for you. Good Luck...
