300U Carb: Runs But Dies on Acceleration

Can"t seem to get this carb going right. I rebuilt the carb about 2 weeks ago. Found that the float (one side) was split. Sealed that up so it floats fine now. It runs great at idle, better then ever. I can idle it up with the screw, but it will stumble at higher idle. The problem is that on acceleration, it dies out all together. I adjusted the float level some and it does the same thing. Checked the linkage and it is working free and is lined up right. It will idle up some, but, a notch higher and it kills it. So, it won"t run wide open or, under load. Adjusted the main jet to several different positions and it does the same thing. Once, it did shoot a flame out of the carb air intake. Anybody have any ideas? I checked for air leaks and couldn"t find any (sprayed wd-40 on it).

If you're adjusting the main jet screw with no effect, then the question seems to be why isn't fuel being sucked into the manifold from the main jet? Have you tried using the choke to keep the engine running while you accelerate? This increases vacuum and may pull fuel up the main jet. If this works, then you could have a restricted or distorted main jet, wrong float level or vent to the fuel bowl clogged. If using the choke has no effect then the main jet is totally blocked for some reason.

Sounds crazy but check your plugs.Mine wouldnt run above idle when I got it....one of the main problems was 1 bum plug.

I put some Champion D-21 plugs in it last weekend. It has been gas fouling the plugs for several years now. It really poured out black smoke and would foul the plugs after running about 2 hours (or less). The plugs would be fouled to the point that it had no power and the plug wires had to be dangled loosely on the plugs so that the spark would jump and fire. This had been going on for at least 6-7 years. It would really go through the gas. We had been running D-18s in it and would change them out continually. I think the plugs are okay now as they are new. At idle, it sounds really good and no smoke. Something doesn't work right though when it idles up. When the linkage opens the upper butterfly valve is when it cuts out and dies. Not sure I exactly understand how it is supposed to work when the linkage is accelerated or advanced. In the governor, things seem fairly loose or worn, but it does rotate the tang on the valve okay. This is my neighbors tractor and it hasn't had much work on it through the years. He bought it new and he turns 90 this fall, so he has had it a long time. I'd like to get it kind of ironed out because he uses it quite a bit.

Got it running fairly well now. It has plenty of power and sounds better than ever. It does smoke a bit though when throttling up. I may try to adjust the main jet a bit more. It is much smoother though and seems to have a lot more power. Thanks for all the help.
