Hi folks, Here in Western Kansas I just recently (like today at a farm auction) bought an Farmall M. Paid $450.00.Mostly in fair shape, body real straight, rims badly rusted and dead battery. This tractor has a 8 volt battery.
Is this a 8 volt system, or a 6 volt with a 8 volt battery put in. To be truthful, befor today I didn't know there were such a battery. Just my luck, of the two M's and two H's...this wasn't a 12 volt system.
What would a new 8 volt battery run, and where? And would it be better to change to a 12 volt?

Thanks,

Innkeeper...AKA, Don

PS...I think you guys have a great site, hopefully one day I can post my before & after pics.

In my area of south central Missouri 8 volt batteries are available at our local farm and home type store. I saw them recently priced at $49.99 w/exchange. If the 6 volt charging components (generator and regulator) are good in your tractor the 8 volt should work just fine. Check your battery cables for being clean and size 1 wire or larger and it should work just fine.

if it works leave it alone. when the battery goes bad get an alternator and a twelve volt battery.

Innkeeper, 8 volt batteries are common and were often put in 6 volt systems. They give you better starting, spin the starter quicker and they fit where a 6 volt battery would. The generator will charge an 8 volt battery as they usually put out well over 6 volts. A collector friend of mine has over 40 tractors and most of them have their batteries replaced by 8 volt batteries. I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with another. I would say congratulations, I think you got a good buy @$450 on the M..... ..... ..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Don, When it came out it was a 6 volt positive ground. The old C I bought years ago had no chargeing system at all on it and an 8 volt batt. If it was me, I would have the generator checked out and if it's OK, there is no reason to do anything other than drop and 6 v battery in it. If the generator is shot it may be cheaper to put an alternator on it and a 12v batt. Bob M on this site has all the instructions. I just had my generator and regulator redone and a new 6 v batt and it can run into some cash. I boils down to whatever you feel like doing really. Another option is to have your generator redone to 12v. Cost about $125 to have done around here.
