Should new brake bands squeal?

All,

I put some new brake bands on a '50 C, and when I brake, she squeals like an banshee. Is that normal behavior?

Also, I'm wondering if I need to adjust my linkages a bit -- when I depress the clutch pedal, the last half or so starts to engage the brakes, and there's enough braking force at the end of the push that I can stop the tractor pretty fast. Should there be any engagement of the brakes from depressing the clutch pedal, and if so, should it be a lot or little?

Hope that makes sense. Thanks,

- David

The band brakes on my H squeal if the tractor has not been used regularly. I think that it is due to rust on the drums.

The brake / clutch pedal cross shaft may be a little worn, rusty or dirty. When you push the clutch pedal, the brake pedal is getting pulled along with it.

I am not that familiar with a C so hope I don't lead you in the wrong direction. If the C is anything like an H or M, the clutch pedal and the two brake pedals are mounted on a common shaft. The pedals are supposed to operate independently of each other, but quite often will get sticky on the shaft and when you depress the clutch the motion will be transferred over to the brakes. Liberal amounts of WD-40 or similar will cure this. Apply the lube where the pedals are mounted to the shaft and work them until they operate completely independent of each other. It may take several applications.

David: Squealing brakes can be caused by a number of items; poor quality brake band lining will do it, if the old brakes had oil, grease or other crud and drums didn't get throughly cleaned and some will just squeal until they get worn to shape of drum. Trucks will often do this and usually the cause is an oil seal allowing oil to leak on brakes.

Three things you can do are, make sure you have no oil leaks, clean brake parts and use of the brakes. By use of brakes, I suggest time will heal. Those brakes should also be adjusted so pedal only has about 2" free travel.

My reaction to squeal is that, No they shouldn't but they often do. This can be a bit of crud or just the new surfaces seating themselves. I wouldn't worry about it.
If your brakes are engaging fully and you still have good pedal left I would't adjust anything. But remember that when under load, like pulling hay wagons downhill, you will need more brake than you do just to stop or turn the tractor.
Just my thoughts.

I am shocked. "oiling" (or lubricating) your brake surfaces is a sure fire way to the cemetary.

Break em in for a few months and it should stop. Never put any liquid material/lube on a lining or friction surface. Residue free (Brake Kleen) sprays, and laquer thinner for cleaning are exceptions. Drying the parts before assembly is important. I assume the "use some lube" comment was directed to the linkage issue mentioned in the original post.
