Ok, what engineer came up with that 5th gear? My books says 16 mph, but I think its more like 20.

Are the steering sector gear and shaft worm gear still available from Case IH? I've replaced wheel bearings, rebuilt the bolster (new bushings and thrust bearing) and adjusted the two stops up by the steering wheel but I still have quite a bit of play. It's really only noticable when in the 5th (a.k.a. "coming home") gear.

Glen.

That speed is calculated based on engine RPM and stock tire size. If you are running higher RPM or larger tires (I have 15.5 38’s on mine) that will drastically effect speed. My M at factory RMP will run right at 18 MPH down the road just because of the tire size.

If you really want to roll, pull that M engine down, get the crank, rods, flywheel, and pistons balanced and crank and you might be able to safely crank even more RPM out of her. Then get some wide rims and put on 18.4 38’s and hang on!!! :>)

On my smta the sector would lift a bit before starting to turn. Gave it play in the steering wheel. Tightened down on the nut that holds it a bit and that helped. If you tighten toomuch it will make it hard steering. Definitely helped my SMTA going down the road but I don"t open it clear up either. 5th is definitely fast. Other thing I hae always wondered is who decided the shift leever on an IH should go foreward to make it go in reverse? Just the way it is I guess.

I couldn't say for sure about the sector gear, but when I was ordering the parts to rebuild the front bolster on my H the guy on the phone told me they had new worm gear/shaft. I didn't think I really needed one, 'specially $300 worth. I'm pretty sure it was Carter&Gruenwalt I was on the phone with, though it might have been Joe's Farmall Parts

What shape are your tires and rims in?The parts you asked about arent avavilable new,but if your sector gear is round thne take it off nad turn it over,it will help alot.If its the half moon type, you may need to find a good used one.Other than that, dont run it wide open going up the road which isnt a good idea anyways.

Yur right about 5th gear. A friend followed me the other day in his van and said I was doing a solid 20,,,,, ,,,,, hang on,,,,, ,
My 6 had too much play in the steering box and someone suggested rotating the worm gear on the output 180 degrees to an unworn part of the gear.I tried that and it made a huge differnce.
