A friend installed a 12 volt, single-wire alternator on his H Farmall. Now he can"t get the hood/cowl to latch because it hits the alternator. Any fixes to suggest?

Just opposite of the others - -use a LONGER belt and install a idler pulley under the alt. link shows it on one of mine. makes it very easy to adjust belt. used a pulley from a lawnmower deck.

WH,

I tried mountin' an alternator like that one time on an old pickup one time that I had converted to diesel.

Without that front support, it started snappin' that lower bolt. Had to construct a wishbone affair to give the front of the lower alternator mount some support.

I like that idea of the idler; same ones that were used on those old piston A/C compressors.

Allan

Did you flip the bracket for the generator?

im guessing it is a larger "gm" style or similar. if you used the same mounting bracket that used to mount the generator you should still be able to mount the alternator. you have to get a shorter belt and rotate the alternator untill it is almost touching the valve cover and then it will clear the hood. modification to the belt tension bar is needed as well. or you could go with a forien alternator as they are usually smaller.

Shorter belt, lay that alternator right up against the valve cover. Use a belt that is short enough that you have to "roll" it onto the pulley.

I went to NAPAonline and typed in that part number. It gave me three choices for rebuilt alternators. It appears in the picture that they are set up to have some sort of two wire plug on the back as well as the post for the hot wire. Will they work with just the hot wire hooked up?

If I were you, I'd go to the three-wire system. Charging starts at much lower RPMs. I think the articles section or Bob M's wiring diagrams will show you how and it's about a half-hour task.

THe Hatachi alternator can be made into a 1 wire hook -up, they will not work with just the hot wire hooked up, you have to run a jumper from the S- spade to the Batt. post.

Heck ya. Everybody knows you just get out the blue wrench and make an incision where the thing hits the hood and git er done. Just kidding guys. I won't even buy a tractor that's had that done. Bout makes me sick. Seriously, all mine are 12-volt, 1-wire alternators, and I just turn the generator mount over, and usually run allthread through the holes, and mount the alternator where it lines up properly. Works for me, Harley

I used the newer style GM alternator on my H. They are just a little smaller in diameter so it has a little more clearance under the hood. If you click on Parts & Pieces here on the left and at the bottom of that page type Ken Koch in the Search for: and click on 1946 Farmall H - Alternator Installation, you can see how I mounted my alternator and I have a better explanation of how I did it. Good luck to your friend....Ken
