This is a bit picky but I've heard it's not a good idea to use emery cloth on points. Apparently bits of the abrasive can remain on the surface. An electrical motor engineer recommended crocus cloth, then contact cleaner for cleaning points. Just my 2c.

I had a coil go bad on my battery ignition 12V H last year - would start O.K. and run for progressively decreasing amounts of time (but all around a few minutes) then die. A new coil fixed that fast but check the color of the spark.

We had an electrical engineer that was about as sharp as they come, but didn't know you could charge a battery still in the vehicle.

Been using emery cloth for over 50 years on
points, when that was all you ever had on ignition
systems. Never had an engine that wouldn't start.

Yeah, I've been known to use emery cloth a time or two myself. Like I said, I was being a bit picky. Just passing along what I heard.

Yeah, I've done both too. Filing points is fine too. Crocus cloth is a very fine abrasive - like a fine sandpaper - but I believe the abrasive is made out of clay or some type of ceramic. Usually a good hardware store will know what you're talking about if you ask for it and the product should be labeled 'crocus cloth'. If you've big buildups on your points, take them down with a file but finish with the crocus cloth (and contact cleaner, if you've got it). That'll leave the surface of the points about as clean as you can get them.

Check the point gap to make sure they haven't
closed. That's .020" for distribtor and .013" for mag. Rub a piece of 400 grit emery cloth through the points when they're closed. Then try to start the engine, if still no start I'd replace that condenser. If you still have no spark I'd replace the coil. Hal

Does the tractor have battery ignition or a magneto? The coil could be the problem for either setup. I would check other things first since the coil doesn't go out as often as folks think. Check to see if the ignition kill or mag grounding switch/wire isn't causing the problem. Check points and condenser.

No spark?? First be sure the distrubutor cap is DRY & CLEAN!! The following info is assuming battery-coil ignition.
1. Is there battery voltage at the coil? Use test light or volt-meter.
2. Is there battery voltage at the points? Use test light or volt-meter.
3. Remove distributor cap, rotor, & points cover; remove the coil wire from the cap & put it within 1/4" of a ground.
4. With points closed & ignition switch on, snap the points open a few times and watch for spark at the coil wire end.
5. No spark: may have burned or dirty points, a bad condenser, or bad coil. Coil primary (battery voltage) wire to points must be attached to + on coil if battery is + grounded.
