I am installing an air vent in a 2 way acting hydraulic cylinder to make it one way. I am using the style vent that looks like brass wires held tightly together. Will water (rain) go through that style of vent into my hydraulic cylinder? Thanks!!

John: Years ago my dad did this by running a hose from that second port on cylinder back to tractor resovoir. Then any oil that bypasses within cylinder will return to system. With one hose they can make quite a mess, if bypassing occurs.

The vents I've seen are just a machined hex-shaped cap with a tiny pinhole in one of the flats. Not much rain gettin' in there.

John, what I did is to put a short length of hydraulic hose (a broken piece that I saved for some reason) on the open port of the cylinder. Then you can route it however would work best and have the end pointing down so it doesn't collect rain, etc. Maybe put the filter on the end of that or make your own out of steel wool that is pinned in place with wire drilled through the hose.
