Possible to replace condensor without removing mag

I have a tired Super A that doesn"t run particularly well and thought I would do a carburetor rebuild and ignition tune-up before diving into individual problems. I went to replace the condenser and it seems the access cover is on the engine side of the magneto. The only thing on the outside is the center post of the magneto. I pulled on it a little but it seems to me that it should come out the other side.

Am I missing something? Can the condenser be replaced with the magneto in place? If so, how? I read the service manual that I bought of ebay and it doesn"t discuss condenser replacement in the ignition section.

Thanks in advance.
Lance

You better remove the mag from the tractor if you have never changed one before. Probably dont even need changed. I would only change it after everything else has been checked out. I have a bunch of these tractors and have had some 30pluss yrs run them in parades tractor rides mowing and garden use and only once had one fail that was caused by the condenser. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Yes Bongo it can be done it exsplains the precedure in the GS service manual. If you are afraid to take the mag of pull the top cover off unscrew the Nut Stud with a 7/16 wrench that the condenser bolts to take the condenser hold down bolt out now you take a pic and carefully remove the outer backelight washer then push the condenser back against the cover on the back side. Then pick the inner bakelight washer out it has a flat side that when you restall goes toward the front lets say middle would be 3:00 your condenser should slide right out the hole on that side now. It is a lot easier to mark the mag and just dont turn anything over then reinstall. But either way it will be done. MagMan

I never thought that would be possible,(Don't have a manual that describes that) but I guess it can be done. Lot easier to just take the magneto off.

Yep lots easier to take it off . I did not think it could be done either untill I read it one day and said oh ya you could do that couldnt you. But I always have problems lining that darn inside bakelite washer up anyways I guess I cant see as well as I used to. But then again most of the ones I work on are already taking off and I dont have to worry about putting them back on. MagMan

If you pull that mag off look to see where the rotor is pointing and mark the location with
a magic marker. When you reinstall the mag
make sure that rotor is on your magic marker mark.
Don't move engine until it is on the mark. The tractor should start then. Hal

You have to take the magneto off the tractor to replace the condenser.
