As some of you know i bought a very nice all original 91 combine, at an auction. I have had several people ask me, why the heck did you by a combine? Especially that old!? And some of these people have a farmall tractor or 2, that are restored! I geuss that tells a good IH collector apart from a bad one, I bought the combine cause it was a good price, it was in mint shape, probably could spend the $700 CDN on gas for the truck and not find one like it. I just ignore people when they ask me now. It's just the same when i buy carharrt coats and overalls, They say why do you spend $80+ dollars on that stuff when you could buy another brand for $40? I just say cause it holds out a heck of alot more than the other stuff. I just think they are jealous that i get all the good deals and nice clothes! What is it with some people????

Yep, some people say we are crazy. We combined about 10 acres of grain last year with a Allis Chalmers 66 pull type combine. We started off pulling it with my Z Minnie and ended up pulling it with a brand new JD. It looked a liile silly, but heck, in the end it did a good job. My friends father was so happy to see his old combine working again. We made a day of it and had alot of fun too..... .....

I collect tractors, combines and implements. I have more fun driving and fooling around with old combines then tractors. Last year I bought a MH 90 in good shape. Don't know if you have seen it or not. To me its more rewarding collecting combines because they are hard to find in good shape. Plus its a lot easier to keep a tractor in operating condition then a combine which makes collecting combines that much more rewarding. In my experience combines attract a lot more attention at shows then tractors. People are bored with tractors. And yes I agree people are jealous when they bash you for buying the combine. Good luck with your combine.

Farmallkid, It's all about human nature! There is nothing necessarily wrong with the ones that ask you the questions you stated. It's just the way they are. If we were all wearing Carr Hart's and buying No.91 combines, the world would really be a dull place. Some folks just have to make a comment and usually do so without thinking how it may make the other person feel. As you get older, you will learn plenty about the beauty of being your own person and also learning how and when to not let other's comments or actions intimidate you. I agree it takes a lot of restraint sometimes.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that you can’t please everyone.

If doing something that brings you pleasure or satisfaction is not illegal, immoral, against your conscience, and does not hurt anyone, I would stop worrying about what others think.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, so if you can find your treasure at a low price, buy it and smile all the way home.

Oh, I’ve also found out that if you smile a lot it makes people wonder what you have been up to! :>)

Well, a co-worker of mine still uses an old AC pull type combine. He uses it to do about 5 acres of grain a year. The way he figures it, even with the looks and comments that he gets, is that the combine has more than paid for itself, he paid $300 for it 10 years ago. He can combine his little grain field exactly when and how he wants, costs him a little in fuel, and about 5 hours seat time. (About an hour/acre) It only takes a small amount of room in his shed to store, works perfect, and suits his needs exactly. Why would he buy a new one or hire it done?

I can't imagine why anyone would give you flack about buying a 91 combine. Am I mistaken, or is that the one that steers with levers? I would be envious, myself. That has to be a collector's item.

You should be happy there are people like that, otherwise you would not get those good deals!

I know a crappy paint job will get money on a tractor that smokes buy the rusty one with a rebuilt motor sometimes will go cheap.
