While cleaning the water jacket on my H block for rebuild I found a piece of wire on the push rod side of the water jacket. The wire was loose and went from the front of the engine to the rear of the engine. Is this common, it seems that it is part of the engine. Could this be an anode that was installed when the engine was new? The wire is about the diameter of a coat hanger (the wire type not the yuppie plastic). Thank you, Bill

Your wire that was found in your water jacket was used either to stiffen or support the sand core prior to casting. To explain further > you have the main mold in sand casting but to create internal details you need to utilize sand cores.these are smaller more detailed units of sand that have all the internal features you want to create . Sometimes these are long and need stiffening or need to be supported . Wire's a cheap fix than reworking the pattern , which sometimes can't be done. Its also possible it was from the cleaning process but more likely from the cores.

Hope this helps
Ed

According to discussions I've read on other forums, the wire was used in the sand molds when the parts were cast, and probalby became stuck and didn't come out when it was clenaed up.

Have heard of that before, don't remember the explanation, it may have come from the factory but isn't supposed to be there -- perhaps someone was trying to clean the crud out and it dropped below the level of the cover and they forgot about it, perhaps someone will remember the other post about this, it was more than a year ago, I think.

I wonder if somebody tried fishing some loose rust out with it and it got caught in there???
Or else they wanted to see how long it could survive in there before rusting away??

Or else its made of an experimental, alien metal form and to keep it out of evil hands they stuffed it in an unassuming Farmall that nobody would guess it would be in.??
lol
