Thanks to all who replied to my first post. Went out today and of course, nothing. First thing, checked the plugs, all have carbon build up and gap range from .029"- .036", will be replacing them all along with their cables. Next I checked the battery, voltmeter showed the battery at 4.74volts before i put the charger on. After putting the charger on for a while, was up to 7.4 volts or better, finally started. Volts were 5-12 volts and everywhere in between. After starting, letting it warm up looked at the battery cables, small auto cables, 4 ga. i think. Got the lengths all figured to get replacements. Battery has branded on it's side May, 2001. Time to get a new one? The fuse behind the panel was still good, could the gauge just be broken? Also, when I gave it throttle, it'd puff white smoke then clear up, is that normal or is it leaking a little oil into the cumbustion chamber (worn rings or valves)? Thanks again for help Rich

You have lots of advice already, but here's one more. A bit of exhaust when increasing throttle is normal.(full combustion has to catch up with the increased engine speed). On start up white smoke is water vapour in the system.
Neither one is a problem.

Depends upon the color of the smoke, oil or maybe fuel. I have a JD 430 that has some hours on it and it always puffs smoke when it starts, think it is valve guides but power is good, it never smokes any other time, it sometimes takes a quart of oil between changes. Hardly seems like a big problem as most newer tractors will take more than that.

Fully charge the battery up then let it set for an hour or so. Hook your voltmeter to the battery - check the battery voltage. With the voltmeter still connected crank the engine. Check the battery voltage while cranking. You are checking the voltage drop.

For a fully charged 6 volt battery (6 to 7 volts), if the voltage drops to around 5 volts or lower during cranking you are due for a battery.

The smoke after start-up - then clearing - sounds like it might be the valve guides...

Sounds like you're on the right track. Usually four years on a battery, you've gotten the good out of it. SOmebody else will be able to tell oyu about the puff of smoke - my H does that for just under a second every time I start it, but not again until I've shut it off for a while.
Good luck with it, and keep us posted.
Wm
