I find this interesting and I figured I would share this with you guys. I bought this old NOS F-20 engine block from Justin Weber several months ago. The block was covered in an unknown black protectant that was cleaned off. I found it really neat to find where they had painted the part number on the block in a yellow paint.

I've always had a facination on how these parts were made and often think of the people that helped produce these old tractors when I'm tinkering. I noticed the paint was not exactly the IH red that I'm use too, but like a faded red. I figured the black protectant changed the color of the paint some how. Then I noticed the paint was the exact color of my other internal engine parts from another motor. Then it hit me, obviously this paint is some sort of a primer and they painted the whole engine block after it was casted and cooled. Then they did the machine work to the block and shipped it off. Something interesting I thought I would pass on. Don't know of to many NOS engine blocks laying around these days that are 65+ years old.

I looked for years for a throwout bearing sleeve for an O14 Hand clutch almost gave up till I stubbled on one thru an Alberta parts house .They had a NOS( still in the old rotted box) one in the basement of their oldflield clutch supply.Seems like IHC dabbled in the OIL bizz by offering P12 power units hooked up to muck pumps and they used the same hand clutch!

That coating might be a product called Glyptal which was used on many cast parts to seal the pores in the metal. It is sort of a red in color.
You can still buy it from Eastwood.

Too late, I had the crank ground down and I already put it in Howard. I'll keep you in mind for the next motor I will do. I did locate an old piston, ring and sleeve kit to go in her. All new bearings and a reground camshaft to top off the project. Nobody tell my wife how much I have spent though. Otherwise I will be grounded and unable to play with my tractors, LOL.

You definately have a real jewel there, it would almost be a shame to actually use it.

I know, many nights wondering if I should use it or not. If I won the lottery I would have opened up a large IH museum and that would have been on display in the parts section.

I would probably end up using it myself, but I would probably worry myself into a frenzy wondering about it.

Trust me, I've been driving myself nuts. Maybe I will just put it togther and leave it in the shop for a conversational piece after all :)
