Anyone know why the fuel return needs a check valve (one-way valve) at the tank? Can it be replaced with a regular fitting if someboday had, say, ruined it during removal?

Tell you why that check valve was installed their. It is to maintain a slight amount of pressure buildup on the pump for lubrication purposes. With it out of there you you will get some aeration in the pump. If you think about years back the truckers would pinch off the return line to get more power and speed on their trucks. So you suit yourself as to wether to replace or not. Bet when that pump needs work you will know why it was there. Those pumps are quite expensive to repair. Bosch has their reasons. Good luck.

Thanks Dutch. Good enough for me - that would be the most expensive 30 bucks I ever saved. The check valve will be ordered.
Best Regards,

THanks for the replies. That will save me some $ and time. I do find it curious that a check valve is in place to keep one the tank from emptying should a fuel line mishap occur. The perplexing part is if that is the sole reason, then this kind of safety device would be in place on all outlets from the tank. I don't believe there is a check valve on the pump feed line.

I'm not claiming to know why they had a check valve on the return but my guess is probobly the design of the fuel tank. If the engineer was smart enough all they would have to have done was route the return to the top of the tank instead of the bottom and eliminate the check valve (most everything is designed that way now). For having a check valve in the feed line if you think about it, its impossible, fuel still needs to flow to the pump, thats why there is a petcock valve there. Now don't ask why there isn't one of those on the return because somebody could forget to open it up and now we're back to putting fuel into the crankcase. Hope this makes a little sence and perhaps you can debate this one over a cup of coffee and the local cafe.

Yes it will run fine without the check valve. I removed the one on my 560 that someone used vise grips to ruin it. Like others said ,if you don't have a check valve and you split the tractor it'll drain the fuel tank.

I should have added that if the check valve stops up the tractor won't run or at least will barely run.It has to be able to return the excess fuel.

You can put a regular fitting back in but if you need to split the tractor or have to disconnect the line there won't be anything to stop the fuel from running out until you can plug it with something. These fittings have been known to plug when the spring breaks in the valve and fuel pressure build up and pushes fuel through the front seal of the injection pump and into the crankcase.

Can't even use my own name, ( I've been there too), I believe the check valve prevents the pump from draining and losing its prime, so I'm guessing you need that check valve. I'm sure there will be more specific info but that's the only reason for a check valve in a pressurized fuel system...Mr X in ^%$&# Ontario
