Hmmmm, what to do?

Except for 2 silly lights in the fenders, this tired old tractor is ready to come home.

But, as you can see from the fuel gauge, it is sittin' there all but empty. Now, after shovelin' money in the old thing for the past 6 months, I don't have the funds for enough diesel fuel to run it 10 miles out here in the country.

What does a guy do in this situation? Should I try to get ahold of Harley? I think he has a lot of money 'cause his wife says he is always "loaded". :>)

Casey: Don't hollar at me about this paint scheme; the party is over, and I like it. :>)

Man Allan, you got me all messed up now. I worked on my 966 a lot yesterday putting the sheet metal on and all the little trinkets etc. and started her up and just sat on her for awhile trying to decide what to do. I sold out in farming in Iowa in 1984 (by choice but with pressure) and moved to Wa and turned around and bought some land here in 1993. Then I started back into a little farming in the following years but don,t know about this year. So was thinking about putting the 806 and the 966 up for sale just yesterday afternoon and then you go post these pictures of that 9 and get me all messed up inside again. Man I want to go out and turn some dirt !!! Are there any 966 conventions scheduled that you know of? migraine

Allan, I said it when you first showed her to us after you got her out of that barn and I say it a gain. Huba, Huba, Huba...What a Darlin! She is a head turner. I do hope you get as much joy and happyness as a man can get from that sort of thing, As the Lord will alauw. Back in the 80s there were many factors that caused what happened all over. You have climed out of that hole and are back out on the mountain top. Congtatualation again on getting her done.
NOW,, does she have a name ????
Can I borrow her on Sat. nite for a date,LOL!
Later,
John A.

Mornin' John,

Boy, I gotta vouch for the John Deere battery thing. With the new starter and those two 12 volt batteries wired in parallel, that engine whips around and comes to life in a hurry!

No, I'm not on top of the mountian by any means. But, at least now, I've got a few options open to me. The nice part is being happy; that's what is important. :>)

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Allan, it comes to mind now that she's outta the shop that pulling a four bottom plow needs those wheels set out a few inches(!).

She looks great. If I ever make any money and get some time, I want to rebuild our 1066 front to back...

We have not yet gotten our hydraulic probmems sorted out with the 10...

Allan that old girl turned out real good. I'll bet you got a big grin on your face. So what is the next project as far as tractors?

Mornin' Todd,

Except for goin' thru the engine on this 686, that pretty much does it for the tractors. I'm gonna put in the high compression pistons and give 'er a good going thru just to make darned sure all is right in that area.

Our main concern now is to find a little strip of something, somewhere that will irrigate and we can run a few cows.

Allan, better just bite the bullet and fill that fuel tank now, diesel will be even higher in a week or so. You might even be able to sell that fuel to your neighbor who needs it. Put a little money in your pocket and save him some money all at the same time.

Allan, if you turn the key on the tank may magically fill with fuel. If not, just add water, it's cheaper. Oh, wait! You were saying that places with water in NE are expensive, so maybe that won't work either.
Nice looking 966! I wish I had the guts and everything else it takes to repaint one of mine. I always think I will, but I don't. It makes such a difference, even if it's just mental.
Hey, why don't you move to WI and bring that nice 9 with you. My one and only employee gave notice yesterday so I'm stuck for help. Heck, we have a whole lake full of water. Guys would even have PAID you to take the water out of their fields the last couple of springs. The 966 would look pretty neat on the 15' no till drill!

Hi Paul,

Bob, the shop owner, told me to crawl up on the old sister, so I did and am setting there just enjoying the view.

Then, he yells at me to start the darned old thing. Haven't heard a 966 run since the day I had to start my old one for the crowd at the farm sale in '83.

Thought I might lose it, but I didn't; the sound of that raw IH power made me forget all about the last twenty-some years. She sounds just like I remember. :>)

Good therapy, these red tractors; my demons are now officially in remission! :>)

I've always thought that being at your own auction would be a bad, sad thing. I think I would lose it starting one of my tractors at the auction. Lots of fellows seem to be quite happy at their auctions though. I suppose it all depends on the reason for the sale. Maybe mine will be an "estate sale". You just know that nobody in that crowd knows or appreciates those machines like you do.

The wife and I were just now talking about that very fact.

No one should ever, ever have to endure something like that; watching your life’s work run down the drain in a few short hours.

After I crawled down off the old 9, I did lose it, went and sat in the house till everyone was gone.

The auctioneer sent a runner in and told me I had to make a decision; the combine was only bringing $9K. I no-sale(ed) it from the house but never went back outside till everyone went home.

But, the good news is, that between this site, the people on it and these red tractors, all of that pent-up guilt is finally, at long last, washing away.

And, Boy! Does it ever feel good to get that monkey off my back! Heck, I'm even starting to sleep at night again. :>)

Isn't it strange you work hard and try your best and there is guilt? It lasts for years and even after it is gone sometimes it whispers in the mid of night.

The 966 is a beauty Allen. I'm glad you have her. Bill

I happened across a fisherman once mending his nets head bent
I asked of him “isn’t there an easier way to make a dollar and cent?”
He squinted upon the harbor for a moment maybe two
His stitching again he commenced, then spoke; “This is what I do.”
I watched him fish and watched him work. I saw he missed his wife.
I heard him swear, I heard him sigh. I saw not a lavish life.
I offered him several different paths. I offered him wealth too.
He pulled fish filled nets aboard his boat and sang; “This is what I do.” He did his best each day. He worked hard and when he could he played. When others chose to leave their dreams, he stood fast and stubbornly stayed. He piloted his vessel through stormy chop and across tranquil blue.
He laughed, he cried, he burst with pride shouting, “This is what I do!”
He taught his craft to his son, as his father had long ago taught he,
A love first won, of a fisherman and son, a life upon the sea.

Every man has his ocean, a sea that he must sail A way of life that holds his heart, a dream he cannot fail.
Many a time I’ve slowly mended my life nets and listened too
To critics of my ways and pondered just what it is that I must do. I pick up my eyes, look to the sky, I get lost in its many hues.
I think of a fine fisherman, his son, and know This is what I do.

Hey Allan, I just about got your 806/M repainted. You heard about the first fiasco with Akmed on the paint gun. Anyway, if you can wait till about July, I should have enough calves on the ground to be able to take a couple days off and run this thing out to you, and I can stop in town and load the 9 on the back and bring them both out at once. Might as well make a load of them, huh? It looks like new even. Did you see the $21,000.00 + 1466 on ebay? Stainless steel bolts, powder coated rims, weights, and weight bracket in front, and there is no way a guy could bear to take that thing to the field. Later, Harley
