I just want to let everone know that if it's a magneto your are needing, MagMan is the man. All the mags I have purchased from him has been top quality (like brand new) with very reasonable pricing and minimum shipping costs...You won't be disappointed...Dixieland

I've always been wondering. My H has a retrofit Delco battery ignition on it. Should I change it back to an H-4 mag? I'm not having any trouble, but does one have an advantage over the other?

Backus, I had mag problems several years ago on my 42 H, I couldn't find parts, so I went to a dist. {small town in the sticks do have it's drawbacks} I always wanted the mag back in place, And with MagMan's help from plumb across country, we got it done. And she sure does start quick with the mag. With or without a battery.

Well I might be a little bias here but as far as I can see you just cant beat a mag when there fresh they throw a heck of a spark at rpm compared to a dist. Back in the days the old farmers wanted parts and they were terible exspencive close to 100.00 Just for a coil and they said the heck with this thing I dont understand how it works anyways and if a coil costs that much how much will the next thing cost. So along came the dist a simple mechanism that the battery makes spark well thats easy.Even though they burn the points up usally 10 times as fast as a mag.Well now mag parts are very reasonable along with coils under 40.00.Alot of people still cant seem to grasp the concept of a mag being able to make there own power and get them and hook up the Bat wire to them and the points melt right around in a circle,And Condenser and coil damage. So if you get one dont ever bring a power wire anywhere near it.Just a grounding switch. But I have ran my 51 H with a mag for 25 years and maybe rebuilt it twice. And she revs and doesnt miss a beat. My SM with the dist well thats a different story. 2 to 3 sets of points a year and she seems to skip here and there under a load at the pulls. She maybe getting a Mag next. MagMan

Magman,

I do need a magneto for a 1946 Farmall A that I am restoring. It had a distributor on it. We are overhauling the engine now and want to switch it back to mag. How do I get in contact with you.

Dave

MagMan, I do have an H-4 that I picked up somewhere, maybe an auction. I do understand the concept of moving a coil past a permanent magnet, so no external power. However, can I bench test it to see if it's worth putting on? That may be a can of worms type question. I have taken it apart ( awhile back) and cleaned it up and probably checked points, etc., but I don't think i checked the coil or condenser or anything else. Should I have the wife hold one of the spark plug wires while I trip the impulse? I have the mag rebuilding book which has a chapter on the H-4. I suppose I should go through it with the book. Any thoughts on what to look for?

My dad did years ago while tinkering with my uncle's 'H'. Hasn't done it since either. Wasn't paying attention turned it over by hand and bang. His arm was numb for a little while. Decided then that the mag was in working order.

YEP thats the best way tell her to hold on to it by the coil cap wire hole while you spin it fowards or back wards. You can take the couil wire and hold it about 1/4" away from the screw termanel on the side and spin her over and see what you have if anything. Yellow
