I took the Control Flow regulator/splitter to a hydraulic shop to check the pressure relief to the power steering. It was relieving at 700 PSI so this was reset to 1200 PSI. The unit was re-installed on the tractor last night. Find following observations and questions:

1) The steering is better. I still can"t turn the wheels with the weight of loader on the tractor and the machine motionless, but it really pulls down the motor and you can hear the relief lifting. Steering is very easy though when the tractor is moving.
2) While motionless and pressure on the steering I noticed that the rest of the hydraulics will not actuate. Is this normal?
3) The tractor has a bail fork on the two point and will lift a 1000# bail easily. So I think the pressure of the pump is O.K. but maybe low flow rate.
4) The hydraulic tank is full. Maybe a little too full because I had fluid coming out of the vent.
5) Does anyone have any suggetions on where to go from here if this is not normal. Could the Power Steering motor be bad and using too much flow or do you think the flow rate of the pump is low?

if oil is coming out of the vent. you have to much air in the system. pull the fill plug out and turn the wheels all the way tight both ways and use the hydro to get it out.....

Grubby. When I was in the buisness I saw what you discribe many times. On M SM SMTA 400 450, tring to turn with out moving the tractor a little is bad thing to do. This was back when the tractors were not as old even with everything new. So could be you have it as good as it will get.

Does the diverter valve itself show wear? If it leaks at the ends it will act like that. I asume this is a factory power steering unit. I went through this on a 450 that had weak steering unless one of the hydraulic levers was pulled then it was 1 finger steering. That valve is located under the regulator valve. Can be pulled in a couple minutes to check. I had to have a new one machined as they are not avaluable. Hope this is your fix because they can steer really well no matter what weight you are picking up!
