I am currently considering buying a 544 Gas w/ a narrow front from an individual in my area. This will be my first tractor, and I plan on using it for creating/managing food plots for the deer/turkey and an average sized garden. Total acreage not more than 10ac. The tractor seems to be in good shape, and I have known the guy for about 6 yrs, so I trust he isn"t selling me a bad tractor.
- I offered him 3500, is this fair?
- How difficult would it be to find a wide front, and what would the approximate cost be?
- Would it be able to handle 3x14 plows?
- Would it be able to handle a 10ft disc?

Your comments and answers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Jake

I think that tractor is a bit under 50 hp. 2-14's here in Wisconsin. 3-14's on 10 acres...! You will just get started and have to quit. That's no fun! Glenn F.

Is it an IH Farmall or a International. I have a farmall 544 wide front deisel and it will pull a 4 bttm in sand easy and a 3 bttm easy in the heavier stuff. I have a 10 and 12 disc and it pulls it fine with the wheels up on disc. I paid 3200 with a 2001 loader and 5' howse mower. I have been told that the gasser is not the best moptor, how many hours? I can say i love my 544 and would not get rid of it. Most used tractor yards should have a wide front for you. Depending if it is the IH or the farmall

Something to consider, the narrow front will turn shorter and take up less storage space.
As far as the plow, it might is your soils aren't heavy. Your are talking about a semi-mounted type of plow? The weight transfer makes a big difrence.
When we got a 700 series 5-14s I tried it out with our 544 utility, it would pull it bout 3 inches deep.
