As a winter project I have been re-furbishing a mounted plow for my C. I have totally disassembled the plow and have used a wire wheel and a grinding disk to buff/grind off the old paint and rust. As I was going merrily along my way I had been priming the parts so that the metal wouldn't start to oxidize before I got it all buffed and painted. Being a novice to this I made the silly mistake of buying some oil based Rustoleum primer thinking that it would be ideal for this situation (old metal and not being able to get 100% of the rust off). Now that I am ready to paint it the proper colors I am having problems with the paint codes. I can find the red ok. In searching for the blue PPG here in Omaha can't find 10067 and DuPont says that the 24160 will react adversely with the Rustoleum. The question is: Does anybody have a reasonable solution to my little problem of incompatability between the primer and the finishing paint? I would sure hate to have to buff all of the primer off and start over. Is there a primer that I can prime over the Rustoleum primer? Is there any kind of paint that I can paint over the Rustoleum primer and then use the DuPont/PPG paint? Thanks for any encouraging advice. Randy

I sprayed Iron Guard over Rustoleum rust primer and it worked just fine. Just make sure the primer is dry before you get out the gun.

Thanks to all that are responding. I am trying to post this question over on the Paint board. The server seems to be busy right now. I like CNKS thoughts on sealing the primer and then applying the top coat. I haven't checked the paint at TSC yet.

Just one more question, is this plow going to be just a show piece? Or are you going to be using it? If you are going to be using it, it is going to get scratched, scraped, and otherwise scuffed up. If you stick with using simple enamel type paint without any hardener, it will be damaged more easily, but it will also be much easier and less expensive to touch it up. Just a thought.

My brothers think that this is going to be a working plow. I have a surprise for them. This one is just for show. I am missing a couple of pieces to get this totally original so I will probably buy a second plow and put the original parts on the "show" plow and the modified parts on the "working" plow. I do the same thing with my two C's. Of course I catch a lot of guff over that but since they are my tractors I just grin at them and continue on my way. Some times my brothers just need to "humor" me. :>)

I used that Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer on a disk a few years ago. I wire brushed and sanded it good. Then topcoated with Rustoleum JD Green and six months later rust bubbles came back! I was very dissapointed. The topcoat was good but the primer is terrible. PS I restored a 3 bottom fasthitch plow with Rustoleum Ford Blue for Blue(which is a litle lighter than Orginal)on the coulters and sunrise red. If I ever get the film developed i'll post it here. Looked Nice.

Ask this question on the paint forum, and ask for Rod(NH) or Frank Stalfire. Rod uses PPG, Frank is a Dupont rep, both understand general paint systems. I also answer a lot of questions on that forum, but have not done what you are trying to do-- those two know what is going on. My opinion is that you can seal the primer with PPG Omni MP170 epoxy primer and then top coat. But, I am not sure if the primer you have will lift the 170, you might try a small area and wait a few days. Usually using lousy primer under quality paint will lift the good paint. Van Sickle and other cheap paints will fade rapidly if left outdoors. Best to bite the bullet and get quality paint. The link was compliled by Rod(NH) and gives most PPG codes for IH paint colors.

If you decide to use Rustoleum paint, use "sunrise red" , it takes about a month to cure, after curing it will darken to the correct color....I painted 3 farmalls with it and get compliments all the time at shows....most cannot believe its Rustoleum...i'll send a pic if you are interested

IH rustoleum red is way too dark, just not correct at all. Surely somewhere in or around Omaha there is a Case-IH dealer, I know for sure you have one up in Missouri valley, I think there is also a dealer in Fremont? Anyhow, go to a dealer, get IH 2150 red, I believe it is compatible with the rustoleum primer. The dealer will not have the blue, you can find it at a TSC or similar, the blue will be the Van-Sickle brand, and also will be compatible with the primer. You will need white for the wheels, should be able to get it at a Case-IH dealer, or you can find Case power white at the TSC, it will be close enough to the IH white.
