HELP!!! I started to change to an alternator, however they did not send me a diode with the kit also they did not show how to wire the ALT. First, do I need a resister, I have a pointless ignition, and a hot coil? 2nd do I need the Diode? 3rd how do you wire the ALT? I have the #10 wire from the IGN to the ALT case, however I dont have the two prong flat plastic plug that goes into the ALT and I dont know were the wire comes from.

Use Bob M's diagrams, as linked by a previous poster. The connector for the spade lugs on the alternator can be had at any auto parts store. I paid less than a dollar for mine. Follow the wiring diagrams, and if the wire is as old as the tractor, (like mine was) then plan on replacing the wires also.

Here's the link to Bob M's site for the conversion >Link

I>Link used this diagram and a three wire Delco alt. to convert mine. I use a keyed switch and left the kill switch attached. I used a diode instead of the warning light, since I had to rev the engine wide open to get the alt. excited and charge.

Here's a handy site that I picked up from here with very easy to follow wiring diagrams:

I don't see any mention of a diode.

The resistor is for when you have a 6V coil. You have a "hot" coil. Does that mean 12V? If not you need the resistor.

You don't need the plug for the alternator. Just use regular crimp-on spade connectors.

IN the archives of this site Bob M has a great wiring diagram for the 12 volt alternator. You mut have the 3 wire alternator instead of 1 wire. I would get one of the plastic plugs that goes into the spot with the 2 male spade connectors. You can pick up one at a parts car parts place. I didn't hve one on mine at first, used the spade connectors, then I shorted one and put in a new regulator. If your setup is currently 12 volts, and if you have a 12 voldt, negative ground electronic ignition you shouldn't need the resister. If you still have a 6 volt positive ground setup with electronic ignition, you will have a problem as you can not reverse the polarity on them. The #1 wire from the alternator goes to your amp guage I believe. IN that wire you need a small resister, a diode or a light bulb in order to keep it from back feeding when you try to turn your tractor off.
