On the factory wide front ends with tie rods in front for a '51 M, do I need to find the front end with the 1/2" plate or without the plate to set the front end way out in front of the tractor?

I think you have your info backwards, guys. The plate is called a "set-back plate" to allow the front end to NOT stick out so far and the tractor will be able to turn around in less than a 1/4 section.
My son"s H & M both have the factory wide front in the extended position and do not use the plate.

Here is what my 41 H looks like with it set out in the original position. My 1943 M looks the same way.
