Will a tach off a 6 cylinder series be calibrated correctly for a 4 cylinder. The tach on my 400 does not want to work correctly and I have an extra off a 560 ( both gas tractors). I probably know this but the ole noggin' just isn't giving me a clear signal on this one. Help!!!

Migraine: Those tachs were all cable drive and as I recall, at least the diesels were driven off the cam shaft. There was however gears between shaft and where cable hooked on, thus one would have to know that ratio as well.

Don't think 4 or 6 cylinder will make bit of difference. Series of tractors between doner and recieptiant will probably have more bearing on the match. Just as an example 504 with D-188 engine is just 4 cylinders of a D-282 used in 560 and 656. I'd be willing to bet those tachs are identical. Your 400 comes from another blood line.

Bates does a darn good job of rebuilding them. Cost me $160 for the one on my 400. Lot of money, but it looks like new again.

Six cylinder has 6 lobes inside on the dist. shaft. 4 cyl. has 4. I would think the condensor will be different for the amount of closed vs open change. Maybe not thought.
