Lifted the front end up with the loader and safety blocked. About 1/4" of play for the front axle between the bolster. I found no cracks in bolster. The axle seems tight on the shaft and moved freely. Shaft does not seem broke. I assume cast wont bend. I did how ever find a lot of slop in the part that the torsion bars( at least that is what I call them) mount to the frame. There is a peice that goes through a small block that is bolted to the frame. This small short shaft appears to go into the back of the center of the torsion bar is. Does any one know if this is supposed to be tight, one peice . I was unable to get a pic this am and if no one responds knowing what I mean I will try to get a pic posted later today. My father wants to use the 544 at his place today to pull down some 100 year old oaks to cut into post or grade wood. County widening road and we dont wanna see em dozed into a pile and burned. Just want to make sure tractor is safe to use. Thanks in advance to all the good people on this site.

Is this a Utility or a Farmall, we have rebuilt our utilitys front several times. Either the bushing wears out or the piviot pin is broken.
I would never recomend using a loader on IH utlities with this swept back style axle.

It is a farmall. The ball is wore and lose and I will be rebuilding it this week. The load slamming I have bben hearing is actually the whole cast mounting that the torsuion arm mounts too. The bolts have wiggled loose and dropped the casting 1/2". Could have been a real mess if I had not took the time to really check the ol gal out.

I think that the "torsion bars" are supposed to be reasonably tight. If is the same as the larger tractors, then there should be a steel ball with a threaded rod coming out of the back. The ball fits into a socket joint and then the threaded rod goes through the center of the "torsion bar" It should be able to pivot, but shouldn't really move up and down. Hope this helped, because I truthfully know nothing about a 544 other than the fact it is kinda like a 504.
