Got the transmission cover off the Farmall M this week end! Those two bolts that had broken off and rusted to the cover really gave me fits.

What do you guys think of the spray on gasket material?

While the hole is open, what can I flush the transmission with?

I drained the old black tar oil out of my H (took over 3 days) then put in over 5 gal of varsol, filled it up way past the full plug. Let it sit, fired up the tractor once aday let it idle for about 20 seconds, with the pto engaged. Did this for about 5 days on the last time I ran it around the yard in 3 gear for about 3 to 5 minutes ,(at low idle) REMEMBER that varsol has no lubrication, so be carefull. Transmition noise will be quite loud. This worked for me quite well. For sealing up cover a anerobic sealer works great, i use it at work quite often as a mechanic in the heavy truck trade

That particular gasket doesn't leak much. I use an IH gasket and copper coat--works fine. I only spray both sides of the gasket, not the tractor.

You can get a 36" wide, 5' length of 1/16" vegetable fiber gasket material from MSC Industrial Direct Co., Inc. (item no. 31945793) for around $35US. Sure, it's more work but I think you'll be happier in the long run. Someone here suggested this solution to me - he said to cut out the trans cover plate gasket and what's left over will provide enough material for many of your other gasket needs. Haven't had the cover off my H yet to try it but I've used the material for several other gaskets in the meantime.

Regarding flushing the trans, search the archives. Some have suggested 1/2 kerosine, 1/2 trans oil - others all kerosine. Some say the thinned out stuff may affect your seals so you've been warned. With the cover off, most recommend just mopping it out with rags. I think I'd probably use the thinner stuff while mopping to get all the sludge and bits out and then just flush it with HyTrans oil.

I've had excellent luck using red RTV (silicone) gasket maker in place of cork gaskets and sealer. Apply per instructions and it seals very nicely. Also it's cheap and it ALWAYS fits!

Kerosene or diesel fuel is as good a tranny flush as anything. Simply pour it thru the transmission. Or for a more thorough clean, fill the tranny with kero/diesel then run drive it around a few minutes to stir things up, then dump.

Incidentally collect the used solvent flush. Let it sit for a few days to the junk to settle, then pour off all but the last gallon or so into a clean container. It'll be fine for another flush, for parts cleaning, etc!

I had a 5 gal. can of stale gas that I used on mine. Since I had the top off for a couple of days, what didn't drain, evaporated. I'd think fuel oil would work good also. If you need brake shaft seals, nows the time to put em in. The seals are hard to pull from the outside. ken

I forgot to add about the gasket. I used a old trick that we used on the really big stuff when I was working. I don't use RTV or sillycone on anything I'm going to paint, because the paint won't stick anyplace that stuff gets. I know it's probably the best but it has some drawbacks. I used permatex on mine. Just spread thinly on the top of the housing, then run a heavy nylon string all the way around the top on both sides of the bolt holes and cover the string with a heavy bead of permatex. It will squeese out the sides, and when it drys, you can trim it off with a razor knife and it looks just like a gasket. Two small tubes were more than enough. ken

What type spray sealer?I dont even like brush on Hi-Tack because its thin.Aviation permatex brush on is good.Spraying sounds messy and wastful, but Ive not tried it.Shaler should make a flush but its more of a job for a bundle of throw away rags maybe.
