While I never owned one they looked cool.
With the SUV craze these would probably sell
like hotcakes today.Might start at $25,000
and go up with added options; leather heated seats,cd-player,signal mirrors, well equipt$40,000 or more?

Allen is right. Ft. Wayne Indiana. IH still has there engineering headquarters there, just across the road from the plant. Makes me sad to see it sitting there empty.

My first truck at 16 was an IH 1210 pickup. Strong truck, 345 if I remember right. Rust bucket, total rust bucket. They were funny too, they had what was called a line ticket, all the parts tot he turck and each truck was basicly some custom thing. If you lost the line ticket, part were hard to come but at times. I then owned a Scout, half pick up and a Travel All. The Scout was cool, and I traded it for a transmission. RUST BUCKET. The Travel All I bought one night from a guy used, junker but ran. He had no title but said he would try to find it. I did not know the guy, met him about two hours earlier at a bar and we had been drinking. This was in Rhode Island. So I bought the truck for $50.00 and we drove it all night. The the motor blew, caught fire and we left it on the side of the road. See ya.

It was not in my name, never regisetered, we just drove it, so when that happend, cost versus benefit kicked in and we walked. I heard the guy was mad, the cops went to him for tow charges but we got away with that. Bad, but it was funny then. College days !

I swear, there was zero rust protection on IH trucks.Every one I have ever seen around here have had tons of rust.Seems every driveway had a Scout plow truck, but they rotted away to nothing just sitting there.Good engines, but lousy bodies.
I worked on one way back in 1983,a 3/4 ton rack body....and the inner fenderwell and hood hinge attachment was a roadsign! Still was marked with the SPEED LIMIT 35MPH! readily visible underhood.Seems that was the best metal on the whole truck!
A guy I knew had a 63,64 Scout 4 cylinder, and it was held together with thousands of pop rivets!
Another was a 67 dumptruck, that you could see daylight around the windshield frame!
When they rusted,it was terminal!

They have a large owners club nationwide, and I think they still have a website. It was a user-friendly site and you could find out anything you wanted to know about Scouts and the pickups. If you are interested it may be worth the time to look!

I believe I once read they were made in Springfield, Ohio, about 35 miles west of Columbus, just north of I70. It's a pretty good guess, however don't bet the farm on it!

No chance that Navistar/IH would ever go back into the small, light truck segment. They only bought IH for the big vehicles, and basically threw out everything else.
Ford has hinted at a reborn 66-77 Bronco (much the size and "spirit" of the Scout)only in modern equipment (diesel engines,FWD/4x4,coil springs....etc).If they could keep it basic enough and fuel efficient/off roadable, they might sell a ton.

Navistar did not buy the truck division of IH. Navistar is in fact the same company that was IH. When IH sold the Agriculture division to Tenneco, Tenneco also got rights to the IH symbol so they changed the name of the company to Navistar. My IH stock was re-issued as Navistar shares. The bad part was that Navistar was still responsible for all the obligations of IH, including all the pensions and debt service. Really dragged the stock down.

IH quit making pickup trucks in about 1975 and stopped Scout production about 1980.

The Ford Bronco was designed as a copy of the scout (Red Power Magazine article). I doubt that the Scout/Bronco type design could survive today without major revisions. I had 2 Scouts and loved them, but there were many things about them that could have been improved on.

Fort Wayne Indiana. The NATMUS National Antique Truck Musem in Auburn IN. 20 miles north of FortWayne has an extensive collection of IHC trucks including a scout.
