Mowing grass aroung the pond before it thawed yesterday and as I was mowing one side of the front end dropped into a 2 foot hole" stopped the tractor and I had to use the loader to get up and back out. Heard a slamming after wards. Looked at the front end and I can see the shiny shaft that the wide front axle pivots on where it mounts to what I believe is called a bolter. The tractor is freshly painted so I think the shaft would have been painted . It appears to have about 1/2" of shiny shaft. I looked at some at the local dealer quick and some are tight and solid , some have about 1/8" space. WHATDID I DO???? The bolster looks like it is cast. I do not want to use it till I know Dont have pic now but ythis is what I have (| 0|) think it should be tight like (|0|)
0= my front axle ,|= cast sides that the axle mounts in. Hope some one can make sense of this jibberish

You don't say if your tractor is a Farmall 544 or a International 544. If you broke your bolster, one for a Farmall will be easier to find than one for a International. I think the Farmall bolster is the same as earlier wfa bolsters; 300, 350, 460 whereas I think the International bolster is pretty much exclusive to the 544.

I'd guess that Allan is right and you snapped that pin. Maybe there was a thrust washer that fell out and thus the extra space. You will have to jack up the frontend to get the weight off and then see what is wrong. If you realy did break the casting I bet you find it out soon enough.

NC,

Yep, that is what I was thinking too.

Let's hope it just took the pin; pin kits are readily available. A broken casting, on the other hand, has a good chance of turning into an Ibuprofen type day.

Ouch!,

You don't suppose you snapped that pivot shaft, do you?

Can you take a picture of it?

Allan
