Most of the IH employees are at THE McDonalds restraunt in Canton,ILL every morning drinking coffee talking about old times building IH plows in the forge shop ,the canton plow works is now an empty lot we drive past on our way through town several of these guys are my neighbors. Many had 20 years or more and comuted to the truck plants in Chicago,Indianapollis, and Springfield,Ohio .Most of these guys are retired now they are very interesting to talk to with lots of stories about the canton plant I would belive my neighbors who worked in the plants before some historical society from Wisconsin

Carl, I"m sure you can get a lot of insight as to how things were in the plants form a workers perspective, and I"m sure they all have their own memories and stories. However to say that their stories are to be more believable than the information from the Wisconsin Historical Society seems a stretch since their perspective pertained mostly to the plant or section that they worked, and not of IH as a whole. In fact many engineering decisions and business decisions within their own plants probablly never reached the rank and file worker carrying a dinner bucket. The WHS has had access to archived information throughout the entire IH-Mccormick Deering, and have made this information available to those who seek it. I would say that anything published by WHS in regard to IH and McCormick Deering is well documented and is well beyond the lore and perspective of a few factory workers. This is not to say that their stories do not hold any weight, but I doubt they can be deemed as more believable than WHS.

Paul didn't mean the comment about WSH to come out that way .What I meant was there are a lot of things that went on in the IH plants that the history books will never know. Management and engineers wrote the history to cover their own buts. However these guys from the canton works did make the best tillage equiptment in the world from 1842 to 1983 when plnt closed. I have a couple of pictures of canton plant I took back in 91 I'll post sometime,if I can figure out scanner.

They weren't covering their rears, the WHS has info concerning actual production practices, this is what actually happened and when it happened -- the link is only a small part of it. But, these are facts, not something vaguely remembered by someone from 30-60 years ago. The WHS has the "bible" of IH. I occasionally use it to cover my own rear when answering questions.

Wife"s cousin kept his house in Canton. Retired from Springfield Ohio several years ago and moved back to Canton. I asked him to locate a 1935 WC AC for me. Called me back a a couple weeks later and said he found one by asking questions while having coffee at Micky D"s. Best vacation I ever had when we left Tucson with an empty trailer and returned with a couple of old tractors. Wife even enjoyed the trip which took three weeks. She was born in Canton. She drove that rig as much as I did.

I should have never bought a red pickup truck. Now when me and the misses go to the farm on the weekends, she drives the red truck pulling the red tralier, hauling a red farmall M while i have to drive the ram charger pulling the popup camper. It never fails when we stop to fule up, someone starts talking to my wife about our Red rig.....really, its the Farmall that does it.

A lot of former IHC employees now live in Mountain Home, Arkansas. They have a reunion chapter there of old IHC employees. I forget what they call their organization.

someone needs to get these guys to tell their stories on tape, this is living history right from the original source, and when their gone its gone with them, be a shame if nobody took the time to preserve these stories, ericlb
