I went to a farm sale today, mainly to visit because it was only a mile from where I grew up.I ended the day with a 1956 S-160 farm truck with a 13 1/2 ft. steel box and hoist on it.It started right up and purrs like a kitten(with a fur ball) It's pretty straight with only one cracked piece of glass. Can a guy make a tractor hauler out of this ? I would like to put my "C" on the truck and pull my trailer with the "H" on it.I can't think of a reason I would ever go over 40 miles with it.What do you think? BTW,I had to give $250.00 for the truck. John.

We had a '56 S-180 on the farm for many years. I believe it was essentially the same truck as yours, only heavier (ours had a 16' dump box.)

Good old truck! We sold it about 20 years ago - it is still soldiering on as a yard goat at a neighbor's grain plant.

Aside from it being slow (307 six with a 5 & 2) about the only shortcoming was the Bendix Hydrovac hydraulic brakes. When the truck was loaded (34,000 GVW) they were marginal at best, even when everything was working and adjusted properly.

You would however probably be fine carrying a C and trailering an H, so long as the trailer has good brakes. And plan on a leisurely trip - avoid the interstate!

Tip: Convert the electrics to 12 volts. It'll start and run much better, and the electric 2 speed will shift MUCH more reliably.

Sure you can. The only drawback I can think of might be that it could be a bit underpowered for any long distance trips if there are hills, and you might want to stay away from any interstate highways because you may not be able to maintain the minimum speed. Of course you could always swap in a larger engine, maybe even a diesel? My imagination is running away here, can you tell?
How about a short flatbed equipped with a hitch for a gooseneck? If you set it up right it could be a better rig than some of the one ton duallies.

Thanks for the positive re-enforcement!I've never had to hide anything from my wife, but this will be a difficult sell.As far as hills are concerned,I live in Hall Co. the only hills we have go over the interstate.I almost forgot,This was the first "BIG RIG" I drove as a teen-ager back in 1971.Maybe that is why I had to have it.Thanks,John.

These old International trucks, especially the 1950-56 L, R, and S-series, seem to be getting more popular every day.

Here's a site that deals with repair, restoration, and enjoying these trucks...check out the FAQ section, and the back files on the "Truck Talk" are quite extensive:
